One of the UK's best known and historic hairdressing names could be about to appoint administrators as the hair and beauty salon sector tries to recover from a year in which enforced closures have been devastating.

Sassoon Academy is reportedly ready to appoint administrators from Leonard Curtis with the famous hairdressing school having drafted in insolvency specialists Andy John and Neil Bennett.

Haircare Limited, the Regis-controlled vehicle that operates the Sassoon Salon and Academy brands in Britain, filed an intention of notice to appoint administrators at the High Court last week, The Telegraph reported.

The Vidal Sassoon name has been a presence in London's West End since hairdresser Vidal Sassoon opened his first salon on Bond Street in 1954. He became the hairdresser of the 1960s as his geometric cuts transformed hairstyles and saw the stiff, lacquered hair of the 50s being replaced by looks that worked with the natural movement of the hair.

He also moved into hairdresser education via the Academy and for many years, it has been a key destination for hairdressers to train or improve existing skills.

The Sasoon hair salons business was sold in the 1980s and eventually bought by US salons giant Regis early this century.
