German fashion brand Closed has teamed up with responsible Italian denim mill Candiani for the second round of A Better Blue, its reduced-impact jeanswear line.

The latest A Better Blue collection is made up of 14 womenswear products and 21 pieces for men, including jeans, denim jackets, dresses, skirts and accessories.

As part of Closed’s wider ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products, the collection seeks to improve the sustainability of the denim manufacturing process by focusing on three main pillars: material, dyeing and washing.

All A Better Blue products are required to be more sustainable in at least two of these three pillars, and in order to better inform the consumer, the techniques and different innovations used to produce the collection’s garments are printed on the inside of each product.

Fabrics used in the collection are made from sustainable raw materials, such as recycled cotton and regenerated artificial fibers including Tencel x Refibra’s Lyocell.

Pieces in the collection also feature Roica yarn, the world’s first recycled elastane, developed for Candiani by Tokyo-based chemicals company Asahi Kasei. Produced with remnants from the elastane manufacturing process, Roica aims to give A Better Blue products a premium stretch performance.

As for the collection’s dyeing process, pieces are treated with Kitotex technology, which uses Chitosan, a natural and biodegradable substance extracted from by-product shellfish shells, to bond dyes to fabric, replacing chemicals usually traditionally used for this purpose.

“When we started with A Better Blue our goal was to create a premium, sustainable product with the same aesthetic as the conventional jeans in our collection,” said Closed denim developer Uwe Kippschnieder in a release. “Now, our vision for the next 4 to 5 years is a continued relationship with Candiani, with the hope that one day all of Closed denim will be part of our reduced impact line.”

The second A Better Blue collection will be available at 150 stockists around the world, including London’s Selfridges, Paris’ Galeries Lafayette and Berlin-based e-commerce platform Zalando.
